"You can only believe in what you don't know" -C.S. Lewis

I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes this week, and that led to a deeper question I wanted to pose to the collective. Are you rooted in belief or are you rooted in knowing? Often, I see confusion when it comes to these two, so let’s talk about it.

Belief and knowing are not the same thing, but people use them like they are. And that’s exactly why they often experience feeling like they are "stuck".

You don’t believe in your best friend...you know them.

You don’t believe in your mother...you know her.

You don’t believe that your car is parked outside...you know it is.

Belief only applies to things that don’t have certainty. It’s what fills in the gaps when someone doesn’t actually know something for themselves. And the truth is, when you know something, you don’t need to prove it. You don’t need to defend it. You don’t need validation from anyone or anything outside of you.

But belief? Belief is fragile and delicate. It just doesn't feel whole or like it "fits" quite right. That’s why people argue. That’s why they get defensive. That’s why they need others to agree with them...because deep down, they don’t fully trust what they claim to know.

So, the question is… do you know? Or are you still believing?  Because if you’re still debating, still trying to make others see what you see, still seeking proof to back it up...then you don’t know yet...and that's ok.

Belief needs validation.

Knowing just is.

So, the challenge is...ask yourself what in your life do you actually know? And what have you just convinced yourself to believe?
