For centuries labradorite has been come to be known as the stone of self- discovery. It was first uncovered, according to history, by Moravian missionaries in Labrador, Canada, in 1770. They so lovingly named it after the area of which it was discovered. However, many historians have made correlations to many cultural legends making mention of similar stones surrounding the older Inuit tribes and tradition. Some claim it has been utilized by the Red Paint People of Maine, for over a thousand years. It wasn't until later in Europe, somewhere around the18th and 19th centuries, where we would see it's rise within the gemstone mainstream community.
Labradorite is technically a member of the Feldspar family. It has become iconic for its trademark iridescent shimmer and its remarkable display of colors. The stone itself is comprised of aggregate layers that cause light to refract, sending off iridescent flashes that can range from bright peacock blue to pale greens with streaks of gold or coppery red. The stone is usually gray-green, dark gray, or black. However it can be found in its yellow form, which is usually transparent in nature and starkly unlike its commonly thought of sibling. The commonly pictured grayish-blue green labradorite is usually found polished and can appear very dark until it's touched by light.
This stone can pack a large metaphysical punch when utilized to its fullest potential by the practitioner.
